A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a first responder, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six-seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the holiday season,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the character of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
