Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
