Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police issued surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
