A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been told to avoid talking about secret information in all cars.
Security Advice for Defence Personnel
During a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
The revelation follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This broader security situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in every aspects of official operations, including vehicle use to communication practices.
