Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Detailing Three Weeks Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a personal account next month called Notes from a Cell, detailing his experience spent in custody.

The announcement emerged shortly after the former president gained freedom as his appeal proceeds the guilty verdict on charges of unlawful coordination connected to efforts to obtain political financing linked to the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Time in Custody: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he reflects in an extract, indicating the account is more about his reflections while in solitary confinement rather than a broader observation of the overcrowded and struggling French prison system.

“Quiet is absent, not present in La Santé, where one hears endless commotion,” he continues. “The racket persists relentlessly. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection is strengthened while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, Sarkozy was present remotely from a room in prison, depicting prison life as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I must acknowledge to all the prison staff, showing great humanity, and who helped make this ordeal manageable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a hardship that has been imposed on me. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It has an impact every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

First of Its Kind

He, who served as France’s president for a five-year term, became the inaugural ex-leader of an EU country and the first leader since WWII of France to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity for authoring a memoir.

Books in Prison

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the three books he had in his cell: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, in which a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned but escapes to exact retribution.

Life in Confinement

The former leader was held secluded due to safety concerns in a room approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in Paris. Guards stayed in the next cell.

It was stated his diet consisted just yogurt during his stay due to concerns any food might have been spat on. Options were available for self-catering yet he declined, according to reports. Not known is whether Sarkozy will write about what he ate in prison.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain daily during the incarceration, informed the court security would be better out of prison compared to inside. “He received threats against his life, has heard screaming during nighttime and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Legal Proceedings

Sarkozy went to prison last month when a French court sentenced him to a five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy over a scheme to secure campaign funds for his presidential bid.

He denies wrongdoing challenging the decision, and another court case planned for early next year.
