Both leaders are strikingly alike in their communicative deficiency, wooden and reticent in a way that drives listeners off instead of pulling them in.

Similarly to public demand to invest in state services has compelled the exchequer to concede that taxes must rise, the financial necessity of boosting prosperity makes it ever harder to ignore the price of detachment from the European single market.

European Relationship and Talks

Officials devoted a period experimenting in the initial phase of realignment with the EU: proposals to end customs checks on farm products; a young people's exchange program. It would take them beyond their capabilities, into trends that they dare not swim against. So as an alternative they persist nervously moving along the water's edge, praying that possibly in the near future the circumstances will change.
