The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
