The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes depict the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
