The Mayor-Elect confirms he will make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, hesitated to declare his residency plans right away after his electoral win in November.
"My choice rested on our family's safety and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the platform on affordability New Yorkers supported," Mamdani said in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change there, Astoria will forever remain within me and my work," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his critics, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the affordable housing despite the fact that he is from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria digs.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
