Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Several parts of the city recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which equals 10x the safe level established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times above acceptable levels.

Firecracker Ban and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the deadly smog that blankets the city as the cold season sets in.

However in recent months, the newly elected local administration appealed to the supreme court to seek a modification of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment".

Legal Verdict and Enforcement

Despite concerns of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities approved the proposal, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during specific hours throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was extensive violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Many recording stations throughout the capital recorded contamination reaching highest levels around the night hours to the most severe levels observed during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Effects

The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also triggered a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partially attributing declining air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles traveling from across the border following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Issue

Extremely elevated levels of air contamination in the capital have remained as a serious issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Around celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Various Contamination Sources

The problem in the capital is resulting from a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, creating dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.

Public Health and Financial Toll

The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous investigations.

The contaminated air results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can potentially cause cancer.

The pollution is calculated to be accounting for ten thousand premature mortalities annually in Delhi.
