The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
