On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a different age” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
